Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute @ Blue Note

One of my most fondly remembered musical events occurred more than forty years ago, 1970, on a late July evening. As usual I was tagging along with my friend, "Rocks In My Head" columnist and photographer, Larry Yelen. We made our way to Ungano's, a small uptown NYC club. Where we were seated on the floor just a few feet from legendary drummer Tony Williams who's band Lifetime was playing four nights of shows with recently added member Jack Bruce on bass. Rounding out the band were Mahavishnu John McLaughlin / guitar and Larry Young / keyboards. Check out the band's second album "Turn It Over" recorded with Jack for some pioneering jazz-rock fusion. This past Saturday night, thanks to friend and "Energy Times" editor Allan Richter, I was quite surprised to find myself at the Blue Note in Greenwich Village for a tribute to Tony Williams. Cindy Blackman / drums, John Madeski / keyboards and Vernon Reid / guitar joined Jack onstage and were introduced as Spectrum Road after a track on Lifetime's first album Emergency. I was actually too close to get a good view of the whole band, and it seemed that fate had intervened to put me, once again, at the feet of Jack Bruce. I managed to take a few photos with the iphone 4 and considering the low light and no flash rule I'm happy to have some remembrance of a great tribute to a hall of fame jazz drummer. McSorley's Ale House

It's been at least twenty maybe thirty years since my last visit to McSorley's Ale House. Recalling liverwurst and onion sandwiches with hot mustard and two for one ales I stopped in for lunch. There is so much to look at on the walls and the light was beautiful on this last Thursday of Winter (wish my iPhone could have captured it better). There's a virtual tour on the McSorley's site that gives a 360 view.

I'm a little late with this post as the date of the show was actually October 24th. At Guild Hall in East Hampton the Lone Sharks led by Gene Casey were in concert to celebrate 20 years of rocking the East End of LI.They've been voted "Best of the Best" once again by Dan's Papers and the latest cd "Rhythm & Twang" was just voted album of the week by North Fork Sound.Besides the regular lineup of Chris Ripley on drums, Tony Palumbo on stand up bass, Paul Scher on sax and Andy Burton on keyboards the band was joined by Lone Shark drummer Stan Mitchell. Natasha Kozak on violin joined Gene for a great version of Who's Sharing The Moon. Sarah Conway rocked out some guest vocals.I wish I had a few photos of all the dancing going on in the aisles.

The John and Yoko / Elephant's Memory Band set ended with a rousing sing along of Give Peace A Chance.If you click on these to see an enlargement some of the faces in the background will become more recognizable. Here (above) you'll find Phil Spector on the left.Stevie Wonder and Melanie and members of Sha Na Na (Bowser at right) join John, Allen Ginsberg is seen on left.After John Lennon saw a Geraldo Revera report on conditions at Willowbrook he got together with Geraldo on the idea of doing a benefit concert. First New York Times Assignment 1999

These photos were from my first assignment freelancing for The New York Times in May of 1999. Shot for the Sports section the story was on New York Giant running back Gary Brown's large collection of NBA apparel. The top photo is an out take from the session with some of Gary's pals who stopped by to watch. The second photo or one very similar to it accompanied the story. This September started with an email, "Guidelines on Our Integrity", sent to all freelance photographers reminding them of guidelines for handling digital photos. With its Photoshopped sky the first photo would be labeled as a photo illustration.

Legendary documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles and his daughters, Rebekah and Sara answered questions in front of a full house at Cinema Arts Center in Huntington last night. The q+a and a book signing followed the screening of the immensely popular Grey Gardens a film made by Albert and his brother David in 1975. I left my camera home but managed to get a few photos with my iPhone.

A highlight of the night was Sara Maysles reading of Little Edie's letter sent to the New York Times in response to Walter Goodman's critique of Grey Gardens. One of my favorite movies is My Dinner With Andre. Starring and written by Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory. Directed by Louis Malle, for the most part a conversation between two friends over diner. A Criterion two dvd package was released in June. This photo of Wally Shawn and his long time girlfriend Deborah Eisenberg was taken at one of Hofstra Universities "Great Writers, Great Readings" sessions earlier this year. Mrs. Eisenberg read and Mr. Shawn sat in the audience. Deborah Eisenberg's latest book is Twlight of the Superheroes.

Bongos Take A Bow

The Bongos banged out their classic indie album Drums Along The Hudson from begining to end in somewhat spectacular fashion, on my birithday.
It was almost as if Mr. Peabody had told his boy Sherman to turn the WABAC Machine's dial to 1981. I was struck first with the thought that Richard, looking slim and trim, must have returned to his native Florida to find what had eluded Ponce.

Sheer joy had Rob, with hair grown out to shoulder length and feather in hat, soaring musically and spirititually. Frank, quite dapperly sporting a Moby'ish look was, as a member of our Bday group noted, still a little powerhouse. Standout songs of the night for me were Video Eyes and Certain Harbours. The latter being a rock jazz improv explosion that really allows the band to shine. Modern guitar effects allowed Richard to capture much of the energy that Throbbing Gristle member Cosey Fanni Tutti brought to the original recording.If the Bongos could grant me a Bday wish it would be an album of songs like this. The trio and a Cosey/Ornette style horn player creating rock music that leans much nearer jazz than pop could be magical.

Cooking Vinyl Records will be rereleasing a Special Edition of The Bongos Drums Along The Hudson, due out sometime early next year. This is a second cover or alternate version that was never used.

Some Photoshop trickery here. A composite image of Rob Norris and a mosaic floor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art surprisingly had Rob looking like a Roman emperor. I thought this was a good image for the Bongo song Roman Circus.

Here is the Interview magazine signed by Andy Warhol. Really only the cover as the actual magazine was thrown out years ago. Don't tell me, I know, I should have taken better care of it. This was the January 1979 issue of Interview, with Truman Capote on the cover. Andy had a stack of them that he was signing and handing out to visitors to his show at the Heiner Friedrich Gallery on West Broadway in Soho. Too bad I didn't buy some of his artwork back then when it was comparably affordable. Another favorite artist, coming out of the East Village art scene of the 80's, would be Jean Michel Basquiat. His paintings sold for $5,000 recently one sold for 5.5 million $$$$. Wish I could get my time machine working.

Watching the American Masters series four part documentary on Andy Warhol had me recalling meeting him one day. He was having a show in a galery near where I was living at the time. I stopped in and he was just inside the entrance signing copies of his Interview Magazine. If I can find the cover I will scan and post it. This Warhol homage will have to do for now. My cousins old Thunderbird. Wish I had a "factory" to run off a few 6' screen prints.

I did these watercolors while staying at the Driftwood Inn. An accomplished watercolorist looked over my shoulder and remarked that I might do better if I had a better set of paints. I guess she didn't like my Crayola set.

American Horsefly

This is an example of the green headed horseflies that along with many mosquitos made camping difficult during our trip to Maine. Tabanus americanus. It is usually found near swamps, marshes and ponds. Male eats pollen and nectar but the female takes blood from large mammals, including man. According to the Audubon Guide: "When the female bites, the wound inflicted often continues to bleed for several minutes because the fly's saliva contains an anticoagulant that prevents clotting. A single animal may suffer a debilitating loss of blood if many of these insects attack it." I personally lost two pints but was able to replace it with some Maine Maple Syrup. This gave me enough energy to get through another day of shopping in Freeport (at LL Bean and all the other outlets).

We brought Trevor,King of the Hamptons, to Atlantic Avenue Beach on Saturday morning. Dogs run free till 9:30 am. It's a great scene with canines of all types enjoying a swim or a walk along the beach with their two legged pals.

After battling man-eating mosquitos (a bumper crop due to the heat and rain) and green headed horseflies we decided to pack up our tents and find a more comfortable place to spend the last few days of our Maine Vacation. Our wishes for comfort were met and exceded at the Driftwood Inn on Bailey Island.

Yesterday's Lobster Bake at Shinnecock Cultural Center and Museum. Lobsters, Crabs, Clams, Potatoes and Corn cook on a bed of seaweed. This was part of the Summer Festival.

I spent last Friday visiting Ocean Beach on Fire Island. The reporter, Allen Salkin (author of Festivus, The Holiday For The Rest Of Us), is doing a Summer share there. Spent the whole day, did some swimming between taking photos, and caught the 10:25 pm ferry back. If I didn't have an early assignment on Saturday I could have slept over. One of the sharers, Pia Catton, is a staff reporter for the NY Sun.

This was a spectacular blue cornflake, 4th of July morning back in (I'm guessing) 96. My top floor apartment, across the street from the Maxwell House Coffee factory, could get Very hot. The roof was a good escape. Overnight it could actually feel cold if there was a good breeze blowing off of the Hudson River.

Klaus Kinder Geiger

Four days after this photo was taken renowned German physicist and avid Long Island Voice reader, Klaus Kinder Geiger was killed in the Swiss Air Flight 111 crash. Klaus was a person filled with warmth and life. Tanya Indiana, Voice reporter and friend of Klaus wrote on the final page of the calendar; "This project is dedicated to Klaus, whose boundless energy now soars unfettered through the cosmos that he knew and loved. I am comforted by a basic premise of physics: that energy is neither created nor destroyed."

In the years that have passed since his death I have often felt Klaus' presence.

At the Javits Center Tuesday night, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer and Immaculee Ilibagiza, survivor of the 1994 Rwanda genocide. In a country the size of Rhode Island one million people were killed. Bill Clinton says our non-response was the biggest failure of his presidency. Wayne and Immaculee are raising funds for Rwandan orphans and the children of Africa.

A member of the church chorus generously invited us to her home where we experienced a Greek dinner to break Lenten fast. Margaritsa (top photo) is the traditional first dish. After dinner guests danced a folk dance, I think it was the Zeibekiko, as paper plates and napkins were thrown at their feet.

This weeks large brush fire in Deer Park had me recalling my visit to Deer Park Fire Department's burn room. This is where fire veterans teach probies what to do under fire conditions. The story, NY Times February 17,2002, "No Pay, Long Hours but, Now, Glory" by Donna Kutt Nahas won a Press Club of Long Island Media Award.

Kudos go out to my good friend Vincent Casey who grabbed my camera and made his way to the stage to get this very nice photo (top) of Rod Stewart at Madison Square Garden with the Faces 1971. We later followed Vincent through the looking glass to a backstage party (middle photo) celebrating the Faces first Garden appearance. The bottom one was at Nassau Coliseum in 1973.

Tonights show had Rod, showing American Idol wannabees how it's done, singing a great version of "The Way You Look Tonight".

This photo reminds me of an interesting first season episode of Twilight Zone, "The After Hours". It had department store mannequins coming to life for one month a year. I can picture these two walking along a neon lit 23rd Street and disappearing into the Chelsea Hotel.

Mead (Ticket to Nowhere, NY Times, June 20, 2004) on Hulda Mazariego who graduated from Wyandanch Memorial High School with a higher grade average than any other student in her class. She was offered a full scholarship to college but being an illegal immigrant she could not take it. Her family had made the difficult trip from Guatemala in 1992.

I just happened to be walking by Barnes & Noble when Cindy Crawford was doing a calendar signing. Since I had my Nikkormat with me I stoped in to see if I could snap a photo and get Cindy to autograph the back of the camera. She thought this was a a great idea and had the video crew do a nice close up as she signed it. I sold the Nikkormat about 5 years ago on ebay for 135 $$$$.
